Global Day Recap (November 16-17)
Yonsei Global, a student organization under the Office of International Affairs at Yonsei University and the Association of Mongolian Students at Yonsei hosted the '2023-2 Global Day: Mongolia Day' on November 16-17, 2023. The event, held from 10:00 to 17:00 on both Thursday and Friday, featured a vibrant exploration of Mongolian culture.
'Global Day' stands as a cornerstone event at our university, promoting vibrant engagement among students from diverse backgrounds to broaden their global perspectives. Held biannually, this initiative serves as a recurring platform for cross-cultural exchange and understanding.
Taking place at the Global Lounge, The Commons, and in front of the Student Union Building, 'Mongolia Day' showcased an array of immersive activities. Participants had the opportunity to delve into Mongolian food culture, experience a traditional costume exhibition, and explore various booths, such as the Ulaanbaatar Cultural Center promotion booth, Naadam Festival game booth, Mongolian Alphabet experience booth, Mongolian cashmere experience booth, Ger photo zone booth, and more.
A Closer Look at Interactive Booths
At the Mongolia Cafe, participants had the delightful opportunity to savor 'банш(bansh)', a traditional Mongolian steamed dumpling filled with beef. In Mongolia, this dish is a cherished part of the official winter holiday and Mongolian New Year celebration known as TSAGAAN SAR. Additionally, attendees could explore a variety of juices and snacks, offering a flavorful journey into Mongolian culinary traditions.
At the Mongolian cashmere experience booth, attendees had the opportunity to admire sponsored brands' cashmere clothing. Mongolia, renowned for its extreme temperature variations, has gained fame for its luxurious cashmere. During Mongolia Day, the booth showcased a collection of these soft and warm cashmere garments.
At the Naadam Festival game booth, participants had the opportunity to engage in various gaming experiences. 'Naadam' translates to 'games' or 'competitions' in Mongolian, and the Naadam Festival focuses on three traditional Mongolian sports: wrestling, horse racing, and archery. Among these, traditional Mongolian wrestling, known as 'Bukh,' is the most popular.
At the booth dedicated to experiencing 'Bukh,' participants could enjoy a modified and lighter version of the traditional 'Finger Wrestling' table game. This provided a more accessible way for attendees to engage with the essence of 'Bukh.' In addition, the organizers arranged games related to horse racing and an archery experience booth, allowing participants to indirectly immerse themselves in the spirit of Mongolia's Naadam Festival.
The Mongolian Alphabet experience booth provided a meaningful opportunity to learn Mongolia's traditional script. Mongolian students shared the evolution of Mongolian characters, and from a list of positive words, participants could choose one to be written in Mongolian by our university's Mongolian students managing the booth.
At the Ulaanbaatar Cultural Center promotion booth, participants received specialized and detailed guidance on various aspects of Mongolian culture. After experiencing each booth, attendees were given small stickers for their hands, and by collecting five of these stickers, they could participate in the Lucky Draw event. Additionally, the Global Lounge was adorned with the sounds of Mongolian music, featuring exhibitions of Mongolian attire, videos, mini ger structures, and more, creating an immersive experience that made visitors feel as if they had stepped into Mongolia, engaging their senses with the rich tapestry of Mongolian culture.
On the second day of the event, on the 17th, a massive Ger photo zone booth was set up in front of the Student Union Building, capturing the attention of students. The traditional Mongolian dwelling, Ger, was authentically recreated with support from the Mongolian Embassy. Despite the chilly weather, students eagerly visited the Ger, exploring its interior and taking photos.
The event aimed to provide students with a unique and interactive experience, fostering cultural exchange and enriching their international perspectives. Organized with dedication and meticulous preparation by Yonsei Global, a student organization under the Office of International Affairs at Yonsei University, in collaboration with the Association of Mongolian Students, the event offered a diverse range of experiences to immerse in Mongolian culture. We appreciate the enthusiastic participation and anticipate continued global engagement in future events.
