The Underwood Memorial Society hosted the '23rd Underwood Mission Award Ceremony' at Luce Chapel on October 12.
The Underwood Mission Award, established in 2001, honors the pastoral, educational, service, and medical mission spirit of the founder of our university, Rev. Underwood. The award is presented to missionaries dedicated to service around the world.
During the ceremony, President Seoung Hwan Suh expressed the significance of conducting the award ceremony on October 12, the anniversary of Rev. Underwood's dedication. He thanked everyone for continuing the spirit of Underwood.
This year's recipient is Rev. Oh Eun-sung (Class of '87), currently serving in mission work in Africa, particularly Chad. Rev. Oh Eun-sung, an alumna of the Nursing Department, has been engaged in missionary activities in Africa for 17 years, starting in 2006. Her work, including the installation of water pumps in remote areas with her husband Rev. Kim Jang-seong, where obtaining water is challenging, became a pivotal moment leading to the establishment of a church.
Since 2006, residing in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, Rev. Oh Eun-sung has been involved in various missionary activities. She has conducted health education for theology students, visited orphanages for nursing outreach, and worked on projects related to water pumps. Since 2011, she has extended her missionary efforts to Sarh, located 800km away from N'Djamena. In impoverished communities, she started teaching students deprived of proper education, fostering a vision for gospel propagation and education through Christian schools.
Through her dedication, a church-affiliated kindergarten, initially established for 67 children aged 3 to 5, has grown into Trinity Christian Comprehensive School. The school now educates 856 students from kindergarten to middle school, with a staff of 40.
Rev. Oh Eun-sung expressed her gratitude during the acceptance speech, stating, 'This ministry has been made possible by the support of many colleagues who work silently behind the scenes. This award is a shared honor and joy.' She continued, 'Like an ever-flowing spring in the wilderness, I hope the gospel will overflow from within me to bring life to Chad every day.'
