An Unforgettable Week: May Festivals on Campus
An Unforgettable Week: May Festivals on Campus

Sketch of Akaraka and Muak Festival

No matter what anyone says, the "flower" of campus life is a festival. The festivals of May are back again; from "Akaraka," which became a festival that attracts attention not only from the Yonsei students but also from the general public, to "Muak Daedongje (Muak Festival)," full of creative energy, the campus festival sites were full of excitement and heat.

Akaraka, the Best Festival

Thousands of audiences gathered in the Amphitheater on May 20. The first session of Akaraka was a safety orientation for everyone's safe enjoyment. The festive atmosphere heated up with club performances, cheering chants orientation, President Seoung Hwan Suh's encouragement speech, and the introduction of five varsity sports teams. It finally began to explode hotly from the moment everyone chanted "Akaraka!" in unison. Students gave off their energy of youth with enthusiastic cheering. The first part of Akaraka ended with a performance by Yonsei University's proud band "Sonagi." In the second part, which attracted many people's attention, many popular superstars, such as Psy, 10cm, Le Sserafim, Aespa, Ive, Zico, Chang Kiha, and Paul Kim, came to take the stage at the Amphitheater, making it feel like a K-pop concert. After their performances, the fireworks marked the opening of the third part, cheering, followed by the exciting medley of cheering everyone enjoyed until deep night.

"It was really tough to get this Akaraka ticket. I wondered which celebrities would come. It was nice to come indeed; not only the pop stars' performances, but all the programs were great. It was so much fun to cheer altogether as Yonseians. Akaraka is the best festival worth the time and money!"

Jeon Eunseo (Business Administration, entering class of '21)

"All the stages were so good that I couldn't pick the best performance. I was lucky to win a spot with a good view, so it was more exciting and entertaining."

Kim Hyobin (Biotechnology, entering class of '22)

Muak Festival, Marking the 138th Anniversary of Yonsei University

On May 24 and 25, the "Muak Daedongje for the 138th Anniversary of the Founding of Yonsei University" was held on the Sinchon Campus. And on the 23rd, a day before, the eve of the festival, "Songdo Kidult Grand Park" was held on the International Campus. This year's Muak Festival was held under the theme of "Dawn: when we welcomed excitement, memories, and youth," in the sense of "Let us remember our time at Yonsei together and create a time to greet our new youth with excitement together." Various contents such as photo zones, event booths, and performance stages filled each festival area, Baekyang-ro, the Baseball Field, and the Athletic Field, giving Yonseians who had just finished their midterm exam the great pleasure of healing and recharging.

"There is no curfew during this year's festival, so I think I can have more fun than last year. Unlike the Muak Festival, I experienced in Songdo last year, I'm looking forward to various club stages and bars."

Choi Sumin (Nursing, entering class of '22)

"There are many interesting booths from sponsor companies such as Yonsei Dairy and Jelly Crew, so it's fun to experience and look around. The student clubs also opened various booths, so it was good to walk along Baekyang-ro and see them one by one."

Kwon Nayeon (English Language and Literature, entering class of '22)

"While participating in the Muak Festival, I was able to experience new aspects of students from various departments and clubs and feel their passion. I think all the booths prepared by departments and clubs with great care and friendly guidance were the driving force for the students to have more fun during the festival! In addition, I could once again feel the sense of belonging to the school by seeing the wonderful Yonseians at bars and club performances, enjoying passionately and also cleaning neatly."

Oh Changdo (Human Environment and Design, entering class of '17)

"I couldn't go to Akaraka this time because I couldn't get the ticket, but I think I was able to soothe that regret through Muak Festival. From experience booths to various performances, I could relieve my academic stress. I know the festival's slogan is "the dawn of excitement, memories, and youth," and I think there is some romance. I thought these students were just good at studying, but they are also good at playing. Yonseians are cool."

Lee Dohee (Media and Communications, entering class of '22)

"I'm experiencing the university festival I've dreamed of since high school, but it hasn't hit me yet. I felt like I just became a real college student, and maybe this is what youth is."

Park Taejun (Business Administration, entering class of '23)
