Introduction

Korea Language Institute teaches students who study Korean culture and Korea as missionaries, diplomats and embassy personnel, foreign professors, employees of US firms and media organizations.
The institute was built to teach the languages and cultures of Korea for the purpose of promoting an understanding of Korea and its language. It was founded in April 1, 1959 and produced educational institutions professors and instructors and 1,000 students each semester. So far 53,305 students from 113 countries have studied in this institute.

Curriculum

  • Regular Course
    • Beginner : Class focuses on reading and writing aiming for practical Korean conversation with correct pronunciation through the training of Hangul vocabulary and basic sentence patterns
    • Intermediate : Class focuses on Korean ways of thinking and social knowledge by learning proverbs, customs and culture.
    • Advanced : Class is conducted in discussion or debate, seminar format. Students learn the foundation of Korean history, literature, religion, expertise of society in general
    • A test is conducted twice a semester, grading will be given by their usual grades, but students will fail if their final grades are F or more than 80% attendance .is not qualified.
      If you complete the regular course, six credits will be granted. If students fail to pass at the same level for two semesters or, if they fail to pass different levels in more than three semesters, they are no longer qualified to take courses.
  • Three weeks Short Course
    • Over spring break and summer break, four times each year (February, March, August, September) students who want to learn Korean can take this course for 3 weeks. This course fulfills the needs of learners by giving the opportunity to learn diverse practical words that can be applied directly to daily life and is adequate for students who need to learn Korean in a short period of time Furthermore the course is composed of a variety of curriculum content such as Korean paintings, Korea Culture, cultural lectures, etc.
      Students who complete the three weeks course are granted 2 credits.
  • Evening Course
    • This course is open for students who live in Korea but cannot study in the morning or afternoons because of work. The class still follows the morning regular course’s 8 step curriculum.
      Open four semesters a yea, lessons proceed from 6:30 p.m. to 9:05p.m. for 2 hours and 30 minutes a day, three days (Mon, Tue, Thurs) a week.
  • Summer Special Course
    • Starting at the end of June each year this course is for foreigners and overseas Koreans who want to experience a variety of programs (cultural traveling visits, afternoon special activities, etc.) and students who have completed this Summer Special Course are granted 3 credits.
  • The High-end Korean Course
    • The course is open for students who have mastered the regular courses of the institute or for students with an equivalent Korean language ability, to cultivate specialized and advanced Korean skills
  • Commissioned Course
    • This course is offered to corporations, universities or organizations that have hired foreigners. If the group can form a minimum number of people to operate a class and request for commissioned classes, the institute can adjust curriculum, time and place.
  • College Korean Course
    • A systematic Korean personalized training course for foreign language trainee who aims to enter Korean Universities. The course is open at Yonsei University International campus and aims to allow students to obtain TOPIK 5 through a short-term intensive learning within 10 months. It is the most prestigious course which allows students to be practically integrated into the curriculum of the university.

Introduction

Foreign Language Institute which was established to systematically teach foreign language to Korean students on April 1, 1969 is now open for Yonsei University people as well as other school students and the general public systematically teaching other major languages needed for global leaders such as English , Japanese, Chinese , French and Spanish. On July 2001 a Teacher Training course was established and 420 patients have completed courses. Foreign Language Institute uses research materials that were developed through the latest methodologies in the education sector. Hence students can learn the most updated expressions that cannot be encountered in other institutions. The moment students step into the classroom, teacher help them eliminate the fear of the foreign language and lead them to have interest in language so that they can use natural language fluently .

Curricula

Foreign Language Institute has regular conversation courses (English, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Spanish, etc.). Regular conversation courses are a six semester course and the semester is operated for 8 weeks.

  • Conversation course (regular course)

    Foreign Language Institute opens English, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Spanish courses, each having the purpose to improve conversational skills. Each language-specific conversation course consists of 6 levels. Every class is composed by 6-12 students. The regular evaluation and teacher’s recommendation adds up to advancing to the next level. However a student who has missed more than 20% of the class has to retake that level.

Graduation

Only students eligible for graduation are those who took courses over two semesters and passed the graduation test, and who got the confirmation of their instructors in their English, Japanese, and Chinese Conversation courses. A diploma is awarded for graduating students.

Leave of absence and Returning to the Institute

Leave of absence and returning follows the rule set by the Foreign Language Institute. Students can apply for leave of absence until one week after opening of a course, the leave is limited to one semester. The registration is nullified when you do not return to school next semester

Lecturers

Lecturers of the Institute are professionals who have acquired a Bachelor's degree or a higher degree on the field of language with the sanction of the President of the University. The institute consists of native speakers and they are regularly involved in various discussions and studies for efficient teaching every semester.

The Institute for Training Future Korean Instructors

Introduction

The Institute for Training Future Korean Instructors was built on February 1994 for the training of aspiring teachers who want to teach Korean domestically or abroad. 1,103 have graduated so far in 2004.

Curriculum

Three times per year (day courses twice a year (January and July) / online courses twice a year (March, September) The Institute for Training Future Korean Instructors opens a Korean teacher training courses with a total teaching time of 120 hours in Korean architecture, General and language, Applied Linguistics, Korean as a foreign language teaching methods, Korea Culture, divided into five areas of observation and practice teaching courses.

Faculty

Depending on the curriculum, Korea Language Institute instructors and professors are in charge of classes.

Registration

As a holder of a bachelor's degree or higher, a person who is teaching or plans to teach Korean at home or abroad can submit documents, applications, self-introduction (training purposes included), a graduation certificate, certificate of employment (if applicable). Trainees are selected by paper screening.

Completion

After the course is completed a comprehensive test is taken on the theory and practice. Those who pass the comprehensive exam receive a certificate given by Yonsei University president.
In addition, after completion of the Korean Teacher Training Courses if you pass the Korean language ability examination, you may apply to the Korean Teachers tertiary lv3.
