Yonsei President Jeong Kap-young recently attended the 2013 Global Colloquium of University Presidents, hosted by New York University March 13-14. The Global Colloquium is sponsored by the presidents of five American research universities: Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. The Global Colloquium meets annually to discuss agendas set out in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Having held past conferences on important topics such as world poverty, global climate change, and the effects of the youth population bulge, the Global Colloquium has evolved into a robust network of university presidents who work towards finding solutions for a wide range of global public policy issues. An invitation-only event, this year’s Global Colloquium brought together university presidents from 26 different countries, including those from East China Normal University (China), European University at St. Petersburg (Russia), Federal University of Bahia (Brazil), Higher Colleges of Technology (UAE), Kenyatta University (Kenya), and Yonsei University (Korea). This year’s Global Colloquium focused on global public health, specifically the progress that has been made in improving health throughout the world and the challenges that still remain. At the opening session on March 13, President Jeong met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss pressing issues related to the global community. At another session, President Jeong participated in a discussion about public health and sustainable development. Here, he shared Yonsei’s plans to create a research institute and other educational programs focused on global issues at the International Campus in Songdo, Incheon, which is the host city for the UN Green Climate Fund. Yonsei, he said, will also expand the scope of its UN Sustainable Development Institute, which was established in 2010 at the International Campus.
