Yonsei was the highest ranked Korean university in the Nature Publishing Index (NPI) Asia-Pacific for 2012. This distinction means that Yonsei had the highest publication rate of primary research articles in Nature and its 17 Nature-branded sister journals, which cover a broad spectrum of basic research in the life sciences and physical and chemical sciences. Nature, like Science, is an enormously influential scientific journal, recognized throughout the world as a preeminent platform for publication of the very best international research in the sciences. The NPI determines its institutional rankings according to the number of articles published and the Corrected Count (CC), which takes into account the number of affiliated institutions per author and the percentage of authors per institution. Last year, Yonsei faculty members published 14 articles in Nature and its sister journals, and Yonsei’s CC of 5.46 was the highest in Korea, followed by Seoul National University (4.60), KAIST (4.03), Sungkyunkwan University (3.67), Hanyang University (2.62), and Korea University (2.43). Among the 738 institutions ranked by the NPI in the Asia-Pacific region, Yonsei was 21st, a jump of 50 places from the 2011 rankings. This year, 13 Korean institutions were ranked in the top 100, which is three more than in 2011. The top ranked institution in the Asia-Pacific Region was Tokyo University (Japan), followed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) and Kyoto University (Japan). By country, Korea was ranked 4th, after Japan, China, and Australia.
