Professor Shin In-jae’s (Department of Chemistry) research was designated by the National Science and Technology Council as the 2012 Excellent Progress for National Research and Development. Professor Shin developed a source technology for refractory disease therapeutics, using a selective Hsp70 inhibitor. As a kind of chaperone protein, Hsp70 takes part in many biological processes within cells and is known to be the cause of a variety of diseases. For example, Hsp70 is produced in a lot in cancer cells, inhibiting the death of such cells. This protein also increases when it is treated with anticancer agents, impeding the decrease of cancer cells as an effect of anticancer treatment. Another disease related to Hsp70 is cystic fibrosis, a kind of genetic disease. Cystic fibrosis occurs when Hsp70 removes the protein when cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductive regulator (CFTR) protein becomes genetically mutated. This loss prevents the CFTR protein from revealing. Professor Shin’s research discovered an Hsp70 inhibitor that increases the CFTR channel activation. This inhibitor has also been found to be effective for anticancer compared to conventional anticancer drugs. It is anticipated to be utilized as treatment for refractor diseases and to better understand Hsp70-related complex biological processes.
