The Yonsei Chunchu, with the longest history among Korean university newspapers, celebrated its 77th anniversary on August 29th. The commemorative event held at the President’s Residence was attended by Yonsei University President Jeong Kap-young and Professor Han Joon-sang, the 16th chairman of The Yonsei Chunchu, who oversaw the event hosted by news editor, Professor Moon Il. Some 50 current student reporters as well as alumni including chairman of Community Chest of Korea Lee Dong-geun, Godowon Cultural Foundation chairman of the board Go Do-won and CEO of CLIO Han Hyun-ok attended the event. President Jeong said in a congratulatory speech that, “Today’s achievement of The Yonsei Chunchu was only possible thanks to the dedication and effort of our seniors who lived up to their sense of responsibility with pride and passion as the leading university newspaper overcoming crises at every milestone of an era. We give our gratitude to everyone at The Yonsei Chunchu, now and then, for having brought the paper this far.” Professor Han, in his speech, called The Yonsei Chuncchu “the heart of Yonsei” and also talked about the crises of the freedom of university press noting that it faced several critical moments when the media environment underwent sudden changes. He emphasized the importance of the newspaper saying that, “The Yonsei Chunchu will undoubtedly strive to continue to write Yonsei’s history.” The speech was followed by an introduction of some of the guests, with an overview of the newspaper and its history. Later, the banquet commenced with a toast. A donation of 3 years worth of original copies of the paper, when it was formerly Yonhi Chunchu, added more meaning to the celebrations. Professor Moon Jeong-in who made the donation shared his happiness saying that, “They are now where they should be.” The Yonsei Chunchu was established on September 1st 1935 as Yeonjeun Times; renamed Yonhi Times after independence in 1946; then Yonhi Chunchu after the Korean War in 1953, and finally to its current name in 1957.
