“Are the hours put into volunteering burdensome? Well, the time you take to eat your meals is not burdensome, is it? When volunteer work became a part of my daily life, I stopped giving it any thought.” When asked whether making time for voluntary work is difficult, Yang Se-kyu replied to the reporter’s concerns with a wave of his hand. Yang, who graduated from the College of Theology, was awarded a Voluntary Service Gold Medal for over 1,000 hours of volunteer work along with two others – Kim Sung-hyeon (College of Engineering) and Lee Sang-gak (College of Science) – at the graduation ceremony on August 31. Even among the three medalists, Yang’s dedication is extraordinary. Yang spent 1,568 hours volunteering at Yongsan Nanum House over period of 4 years – over 400 hours more than the other two medalists. He basically spent at least an hour everyday volunteering at the welfare center during his 4 years at university. Given the frenzy among students to build up their CV and achieve higher grades, it is a wonder that he spared time for other activities. It was 4 years ago when Yang first came across a notice that Yongsan Nanum House, a welfare center mainly involved in a program supporting muti-cultural families, was recruiting volunteers. “I first heard that the Yongsan Nanum House was looking for a day-worker to help out with a festival for multi-cultural families. Originally, I was thinking of volunteering for one day and uploading pictures on my homepage.” However, he said he was deeply touched by how people from various backgrounds took delight in volunteering works irrelevant to their jobs.
