In a recent television documentary, Louis Henry Severance’s sharing spirit and donation know-how was introduced to the Korean people. In addition to his spirit of sharing that has been carried on for more than 100 years, the documentary illuminated the overseas medical services that have been taken up by Mr. Severance’s charity. On July 9th (part 1) and 10th (part 2), Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) telecasted an anniversary special documentary entitled ‘The Happiness of Walking Hand in Hand with Louis Henry Severance.’ Part one presented the donation philosophy and know-how of the Severance family. The traces of the donations reveal a similarity in ‘human oriented’ standpoints that approach the donations from the beneficiaries’ situations. In this respect, the family’s focus on human capital and education come from Mr. Severance’s determination to bring attention and respond to the need for space in order to provide education. For this reason, his donations include numerous buildings such as the chemistry building, gymnasium, and Severance Hall in The College of Wooster, The Severance Chemical Laboratory in Oberlin College, and the Allen Memorial Medical Library in Case Western Reserve University. These donations show how much value the Severance family placed on hardware in addition to software. With a background in accounting, Mr. Severance made one of his primary donation philosophies to be fund management. The documentary spotlights the John Long Severance (Mr. Severance’s son) Fund which has been handed down to posterity well over a hundred years. Part two illuminates the voluntary medical services which the ‘Severance people’ have provided to others around the world. In particular, the documentary highlighted four ‘Severance people’—Director of Yonsei Friendship Hospital in Mongolia, Missionary Choi Won-kyu (Yonsei University College of Medicine, Class of ’82); Founder and Director of Hanoi Sunny Red Cross Korea Clinic, Missionary Kim Si-chan (Yonsei University College of Medicine, Class of ’83); Emeritus Professor Rhim Kyung-il, who teaches Basic Medicine at Health Sciences University of Mongolia; and Emeritus Professor Lee Chung-kuk, who teaches Dentistry at The School of Dentistry of Health Sciences University of Mongolia. Mr. Severance’s donations and spirits of sharing were further elucidated by interviews with President and CEO of Yonsei University Health System, Lee Chul; Emeritus Professor Lee Yu-bok; Emeritus Professor Yu Seung-heum; and Director of Dong-Eun Medical Museum, Park Hyung-woo. The documentary producer Kim Woo-cheol said, “Although Mr. Severance left the world without any property, his spirit and philosophy of donation walks with many others hand in hand.”
