A sculpture of Dr. Alfred Irving Ludlow (1875-1961), who retired in 1938 having served as professor of surgery and surgical pathology at Severance Union Medical College for 26 years, is expected to become a cultural asset. The sculpture is the work of Korea’s first contemporary sculptor Kim Bok-jin (1901-1940) capturing Dr. Ludlow’s image in 1938 and is currently kept at Dong-Eun Medical Museum. Kim Chan, administrator of Korea's Cultural Heritage Administration, said, “This piece is a rare piece of work from the Japanese colonial era. It is a masterpiece depicting the characteristics of the person in a realistic and detailed manner.” In regard to the reason for registering the piece as a cultural heritage, he said, “It has tremendous significance as an artifact in the field of modern sculpture in terms of its historical and artistic value.”
