The Residential College (RC) system has emerged as an issue among universities in Korea since Yonsei University has considered adopting the system. While agreeing that the RC program provides an effective environment for holistic and convergence education, many point out that consistent support is essential to its growth and success. As a community setting of students and faculty, a residential college offers integrated opportunities for living and learning. Universities in the U.S. that implement residential colleges include Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Yale University. Whereas the traditional system served as merely offering courses, the RC seeks to foster global leaders through engagement in a community setting filled with a range of academic, cultural, and social service activities. *What is RC? Holistic and Full-time Education The Residential College (RC) is a holistic and full-time educational system that takes on a creating learning community which intends to achieve a harmony of intelligence, virtue, and spirituality. Culture Community The RC system is a setting of culture community. Students engage in a wide variety of cultural, religious, and social service activities according to every individual’s interest and aptitude. Participating in such activities with RC members enables students to expand their understanding of humanistic constructs and artistic sensibility. Invigorates Student Activities The RC system extends the daily time that students spend on campus to 24 hours. This increase in time leads to more robust and dynamic senior-junior networks and club activities. Global Leadership The RC system is an educational site where students from diverse backgrounds and with cultural differences learn to become global leaders and members by coming to understand their similarities and differences, and realizing the importance of communication and collaboration. A New Paradigm of Higher Education in Korea The RC model is an educational paradigm that is one of the most essential features of globally prominent institutes of higher education. These include Harvard University, Yale University, and Princeton University in the U.S. and Oxford University and Cambridge University in England where the RC system is operated at the undergraduate level. Ivy-League Educational Model The RC model cultivates talented students capable of creative and critical thinking. The residential colleges provide rich opportunities of interaction with various cultures and communities in the scope of daily life-experiences for all the students. The RC program is an Ivy-League educational model that Yonsei University proposes in pursuit of the advancement of higher education in Korea.
