[YONSEI NEWS] Emperor Gojong Wearing Sunglasses,Dr. Allen MakingHis Rounds on a Donkey

Yonsei University Health System Releases Rare Photos in Commemoration of 127thAnniversary of ‘House of Universal Helpfulness’ “Emperor Gojong was also a stylish leader” Rare pictures from the late Joseon Dynasty, including ones of Emperor Gojong sporting a pair of sunglasses in the royal carriage and of medical missionary Dr. Horace Newton Allen, will be released for the first time. Yonsei University Health System(YUHS), formerly House of Universal Helpfulness (House of Extended Grace),helda 10-day exhibitiontitled “Late 19th Century Joseon Through the Eyes of Allen”at The Art Space in the Severance Hospital Main Building, in commemorationof its127th anniversary starting April 10th. The exhibition consisted of photographs in two albums of Dr. Allen’s that he had personally either taken or collected. Dr. Allen was the main medical examiner at House of Universal Helpfulness. The albums includingabout 60 pictures were donated to YUHS by Moon Heung-ryeol, HB Group Chairman and honorary ambassador to Yonsei, in April 2010. Pictures capturing the scene of Seoul and surrounding areas during the Joseon Dynasty in the late 19th Century were on display at the exhibition. They included: Emperor Gojong wearing sunglasses in the royal carriage; Dr.Allen making visits on a donkey (color);Gyeongbok and Changdeok Palaces, American Legation Office, Cheonggaecheon and Segeomjeong. Director Park Hyung-woo of Dongeun Medical Museum (Professor, Department of Anatomy at Yonsei College of Medicine) said, “These pictures from Dr. Allen’s albums released to the public are valuable sources in re-illuminating modern Korean history. We can compare Korea 120 years ago and today, and see for ourselves how it has changed then and now.”
