Yonsei University and POSCO will jointly build the world’s first-ever eco-friendly mixed-use building in Yonsei University International Campus – POSCO Green Building. It is the product of Yonsei University’s eco-friendly vision as Korea’s representative private school and POSCO’s cutting edge technology. Unlike other existing eco-friendly buildings that simply claim to be eco-friendly, POSCO Green Building will be a revolutionary structure and the best not just in Korea, but in the world. The mixed-use building will consist of offices, modular architecture and housing facilities. It will maximize energy efficiency using solar energy and minimize carbon dioxide emissions. POSCO Green Building, aiming for low-carbon green growth, will demonstrate models for 60%, 80% and 100% energy reducing offices and housing facilities. The reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the entire building is expected to be around 100 tons when compared to the emission level of normal buildings that do not have any green architectural features. Based on the building’s 60-year life cycle, the effects will be equivalent to planting 560,000 trees. The groundbreaking ceremony for the POSCO Green Building was held on March 9. Yonsei President Jeong Kap-Young, POSCO CEO Chung Joon-yang, Chairperson of Presidential Committee on Green Growth Yang Soo-gil, Deputy Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Han Man-hee and Incheon Mayor Song Young-gil attended the ceremony. The groundbreaking event itself also got a lot of attention. The facilities, including the microphones, operated on 100% natural solar power and no external power sources were employed. Recycled paper was used for the event and a sapling was planted in place of the tape cutting. After the ceremony, an international seminar was held in the POSCO Global R&D Center at 2 pm. Some of the attendees and presenters included Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology CEO Choo Wung-yong, Professor Lee Eon-gu of Chungang University. POSCO will fund some 20 billion in the POSCO Green Building worth 5290 m² in total floor space. It will consist of office spaces on the fourth and the basement floors and housing facilities on the third floor. Some 110 eco-friendly architectural methods will be applied in the construction, such as photovoltaic systems and geothermal heat, to create a green building where nature and people can harmonize and coexist.
