“Put your worries behind and study hard to do great things for the country." On November 25th, businesses in Sinchon, Seodaemun-gu welcomed a visitor. It was Park Chang-ik, a junior at Yonsei University College of Law, who made the visit to express his thanks to the business owners in Shinchon who provided money for his scholarship. Park entered Yonsei in 2006 and is currently preparing for the bar exam. He is living in the dormitory at the College of Law. Park said, "My father died of liver cancer after I passed the first bar exam in 2009" and "Ever since, my mother who runs a 50㎡-sized barley eatery in my hometown Jinju, Gyungnam sends me 300,000 won for my living costs." Park said, "I was getting worried about how to come up with next semester’s tuition of 3.6 million won and the scholarship came as a surprise" and said, “I can concentrate on studying without any worries," as he held the hands of the contributors. The scholarship Park received was financed by "Yonsei University Shinchon Area Supporters Association" which consists of about 180 people who run businesses such as eateries, supermarkets, pharmacies, spectacles shops, real estate agencies and so on in Shinchon. Since 1995, the School has selected students who study hard even in difficult situations and the Association finances the scholarship. The Association was founded by Jung Jun-chon, the late father of Jung Seung-ryong, the owner of the restaurant "Hyungjaegalbi," Late Jung believed that it is because of Yonsei University that businesses in Shinchon survive. Jung Seung-ryong said, "Following the footsteps of my father, we will continue to support as long as we do business in this area." Park said, "A merit-based scholarship was out of my reach given my GPA because I had to study for the bar exam and I was worried because I never had enough time to study because of my part-time job" and that "The scholarship was very timely given that I would have to start all over from the very beginning if I don’t pass this year's second bar exam." Lee Jae-ho, the Association’s vice president who runs a 10㎡-sized real estate agency "Shinsaegae," said that "Members pay from 100,000 won up to 5 million won depending on their earnings" and that "They will continue their sponsorship despite difficult circumstances." The Association contributed 2.2 hundred million won to 172 students for the past 16 years. This year, they decided to give 3 million won each to ten students. One person who has been running a pharmacy in front of Yonsei for the past 47 years said, "I earned my Ph.D last 2008" and that "I have contributed 500,000 won because I want to help the students study." Chairperson of the Korea Federation of Community Credit Cooperative’ Sinchon branch said that “For the past seven years, 300,000 won have been donated under the name of KFCCC, and another 300,000 won under my name" and that "I feel sorry that I cannot donate as much as I would like to." Park said, "I will become a great member of the legal profession and pay back the help I received."
