[YONSEI NEWS] Professor Emeritus Lee Bang-sook Donates One Hundred Million Won

Yonsei University Professor Emeritus Lee Bang-sook donated one hundred million won as scholarship funds. Professor Lee, who is also a well-known pianist, visited the President’s Office on December 2nd and personally delivered one hundred million won to President Kim Han-joong, asking for the money to be used for talented students in the Department of Music (Instrumental). Professor Lee, as did her late father Lee In-beom, was the Dean at the Department of Music at Yonsei. She was born in 1943 and attended Ewha Women’s High School, Seoul National University’s College of Music, and Graduate School at the University of Minnesota, majored in piano at the New England Conservatory, and was the Dean at Yonsei’s College of Music. She also served as the President of Korea’s Duo Piano Society, Vice President of the Society for Chopin, and Harvard Professor at Yenching Her late father Lee In-beom was also a prominent figure in Korea’s music history. He won first place in a Japan-wide competition at Yonhi Professional School and he was a renowned tenor who wrote popular many songs such as "Bongsunhwa," "Gagopa," and "To the Country of Hope" that starts with the familiar line "Row the boat-." He was a professor at Seoul National University and Yonsei University and contributed to the development of Korean music by founding an opera school. Professor Lee Bang-sook’s husband, Won Woo-hyun, is a Professor Emeritus at Korea University and was the Dean at Korea University’s Graduate School of Mass Communication and Journalism.
