Findings of Professor Cheon Jin-woo’s Research Team Published in Nature Nanotechnology Professor Cheon Jin-woo’s (Department of Chemistry, Yonsei University) research team has developed magnetic nanoparticles with higher efficiency of thermal induction. This study was published in the June 2011 online volume of Nature Nanotechnology, a globally prestigious journal in the field of nanotechnology with an impact factor of 30.306. Led by Professor Cheon’s research team, the study was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Ministry of Health & Welfare, and was jointly conducted with Professor Park Kook-in (College of Medical Science, Yonsei University) and Dr. Kim Jin-gyu (Korea Basic Science Institute). The study findings demonstrate optimized core-shell magnetic nanoparticles which contain higher efficiency of thermal induction than conventional nanoparticles. In general, due to their sensitivity to heat, cancer cells are known to become destroyed at temperatures over 42 degrees Celsius. For this reason, nano material with high efficiency of thermal induction was necessary for effective thermal treatment. To modulate the magnetic properties of nanoparticles and maximize the specific loss power, the exchange coupling between magnetically hard core and magnetically soft shell was employed. These core-shell magnetic particles not only have increased the efficiency of thermal induction, but also have contained the potential to be applied to all kinds of cancer treatment.
