Yonsei University was placed 18th in the 2011 Asian University Ranking which was jointly conducted by Chosun Ilbo and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). As the one and only international ranking of Asian universities, the Chosun Ilbo-QS Asian University Ranking this year evaluated 437 universities in 14 countries (Hong Kong as an individual nation). The ranking was based on the four categories: research competence (60%), education level (20%), alumni reputation (10%), and internationalization index (10%). While first place was awarded to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, subsequent places were taken by University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, and University of Tokyo. The Asian rankings of universities in Korea were: Seoul National University (No. 6 in Asia, No. 1 in Korea), KAIST (No. 11 in Asia, No. 2 in Korea), POSTECH (No. 12 in Asia, No. 3 in Korea), and Korea University (No. 26 in Asia, No. 5 in Korea). Yonsei’s ranking in Asian universities rose a notch from 19th to 18th place this year. Yonsei continues to be the only private comprehensive university in Korea to be ranked in the top 20 Asian universities. Yonsei also ranked 17th (7th in Korea) in the Asian ranking of internationalization which is measured in terms of the rate of foreign faculty, foreign students, and exchange students both at Yonsei and abroad.
