[INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS] Strengthened Network with Prestigious Universities in Australia

For a one-week period in late April to early May, Yonsei President Kim Han-joong and Vice President for International Affairs Kim Dong-hoon visited prestigious universities in Australia in order to promote international cooperation initiatives of Yonsei and strengthen its global network. On May 2nd, the delegation of Yonsei visited the Australian National University (ANU). In a meeting with ANU Vice-Chancellor Ian Young and other officials, the MOU between ANU and Yonsei was renewed; and in a meeting with the faculty of the College of Asia and the Pacific, ANU, President Kim conversed about the growth of interest in Asian and Korean studies and the plans to facilitate the exchanges of scholars and students in those areas of studies. In a welcoming lunch, President Kim met with the students majoring in Korean studies at ANU. While the first Australia Research Center was first established in Korea at Yonsei and the Korea Institute in ANU, the two universities look forward to co-organizing annual conferences and offering e-lectures. On May 3rd, the delegation visited Monash University where President Edward Byrne and President Kim shared their strategies and visions of globalization. As a renowned institution for globalization education, Monash University runs branch schools in Malaysia and South Africa, and the rate of international students in the campus occupies approximately 35 percent. After a welcoming lunch, the delegation attended the special lecture presented by Korean Ambassador in Australia Kim Woo-sang on the theme of ‘Korea-Australia Cooperation as Middle Powers’. On May 5th, the delegation met with the President of the University of New South Wales Frederick Hilmer, where the two universities renewed their agreement for exchange, also discussing plans to increase student exchanges and develop visiting scholar programs. In a meeting with Dean of the department of Public Health, the two universities agreed on a joint degree program in Public Health as well.
