Kim Hyong-cheol, Head Director of Yonsei International Campus The Yonsei International Campus located in the Songdo district in Incheon city has launched its degree programs since Spring 2011. The International Campus has greeted a total of around 430 freshman students in the colleges of Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, Free Major, Integrated Technology Engineering, Foreign Global, and Underwood International College. As a global leading campus, the International Campus aims to educate talents who will represent Asia and become world leaders. As Head Director of the Yonsei International Campus, Professor Kim Hyong-cheol will guide the campus into the Asian hub of education and research. As for the three chief features of the educational programs in the International Campus, they are convergence learning, global learning, and residential learning. Professor Kim Hyong-cheol points out the importance of convergence learning, quoting Hegel’s philosophy of mind and saying “the human mind can be opened only from the inside”. “Convergence talents enable experts and professionals to communicate. They are the ones who generate chemical actions and create useful new ideas. In the past, competitors or rivals were easily recognized, but not anymore. In the past, competitors were people and companies in the same line of business, but this is no longer true as it is shown in the case of the recent cell phone industry. How many of us anticipated Apple to cause such an enormous fluctuation in the cell phone industry which appeared to be dominated by the major companies such as Samsung, LG, and Nokia. Now, people and companies who communicate merely with neighboring fields cannot survive; they need to move in all directions. And university education should be aimed to prepare young people with convergence learning. As for the second characteristic of the International Campus, Professor Kim Hyong-cheol points to global learning. The Campus operates ‘English Premium Education’, one of the programs intended to expand the opportunities for superior learning and to immerse the students into the English language. “Global learning is mainly based on English learning and global mind. Apart from few exceptions, all courses on the International Campus are offered in English. This not only provides higher exposure to the English language, but equips students with the competence to acquire and develop their knowledge in English as well. More important than learning the English language is acquiring global mind. From the diverse exchange student programs both on campus and overseas, Yonseians will have more chances to be classmates and friends with foreign students. The third feature is residential learning. The International Campus is designed to promote convergence and global learning through residential learning. “On the International Campus, faculty members serve as Residential Head and English natives serve as English Residential Fellows. In year 2013 when the International Campus is entirely constructed, approximately 5,000 students and faculty will reside on the campus. The educational philosophy of the Yonsei International Campus is based on the three notions—experience, endeavor, and dream. Professor Kim Hyong-cheol explains, “First, learning is obtained in the process of experiencing new things and meeting new people. Second, making constant efforts is inevitable in learning. “No Pain, No Gain” Lastly, education allows students to make goals and realize dreams. It is not merely to satisfy parents or secure an easy life. Learning is for creating and accomplishing dreams. I will do all I can in order to help Yonseians create dreams, strive to achieve their dreams, and share experiences with diverse people—at the International Campus.”
