Professor Kwon Young-geun discovers angiogenesis derived protein, effective for angina and myocardial infarction Professor of Biochemistry Kwon Young-geun’s research team has developed angiogenesis treatment for ischaemic cardiovascular disease which is caused by thromboembolism. From analysis of large vascular genomes and of gene functions, the team discovered the DKK2 gene which significantly induces angiogenesis in the body. Animal testing results have demonstrated the DKK2 gene’s successful treatment of hindlimb ischemia and myocardial infarction. While the cases of cardiovascular diseases continually increase worldwide due to unhealthy dietary habits and the aging society, no fundamental treatment is available yet. Since the existing angiogenesis factor VEGF creates troubles such as vascular infection and ANG-1 displays problems in the course of protein production, the development of treatment of cardiovascular diseases has been left as a challenge. However, Professor Kwon’s research findings on DKK2 protein are being assessed as a noticeable and promising treatment. The study has been recently published on the online version of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, a world-famous journal in the field of medical science.
