‘Yonsei-CalArts School of Arts’ (tentative name) at International Campus Yonsei will run a joint degree program with the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), an internationally renowned art school. There are some universities in Korea which have signed student exchange programs with CalArts, but Yonsei is the first in Korea to run a joint degree program with CalArts. On December 21, 2010, Yonsei President Kim Han-joong and CalArts President Steven D. Lavine signed an MOU on exchange programs and joint degree programs. The joint degree program intends to focus on developing professional artists versed in both technical skills and cultural sensitivity. The program will create new joint curricula, and eminent faculty from CalArts will teach courses at the International Campus. The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was founded in 1961 by Walt Disney Productions, which was based on the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the Chouinard Art Institute. As one of the leading centers for undergraduate and graduate study in performing and visual arts and critical studies, CalArts comprises six schools—Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater. CalArts is recognized for its professional and practical course offerings for undergraduate students. Whereas other art schools normally run preliminary or foundation courses for undergraduates, CalArts implements a distinctive undergraduate program which is composed of intensive courses. CalArts has produced globally renowned artists, including film director Tim Burton, especially known for movies such as Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005); Stephen Hillenburg, producer of the famous American TV animation series SpongeBob; Brad Bird, director and screenwriter of The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007); painter and sculptor Eric Fischl; and composer Earl Howard, who has produced a lot of soundtracks for video artists including the late Nam June Paik. The late Nam June Paik was a professor of the School of Film/Video in 1969. More CalArts graduates include musical director Kolleen Park and Korean graphic designer Somi Kim, founder and principal of Reverb Studio.
