The ‘Yonsei University Shinchon Area Supporting Association’ is a group of 133 merchants who own stores near Yonsei. The members of this association make annual donations from one hundred thousand won to several million won for scholarships to Yonsei students. Since its establishment in 1995, for 16 years the association has contributed a total of 1.99 hundred million won for scholarships to 165 Yonsei students. This year, the members delivered three million won scholarships to seven Yonsei students—a total of 21 million won. Mr. Kim Dae-yoon (68), who has run an eyewear store in Shinchon for 30 years, said, “My son is a graduate of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Yonsei. I’ve donated one million won every year, but this year I could only afford to pay half a million.” The place for the gathering was provided by Mr. Jung Seung-ryong, owner of Hyongjae Galbi. His father, who opened the restaurant in 1972, played the leading role in organizing the supporting association. Mr. Jung said, “I graduated Korea University, but following my father’s wish my family will continue to support Yonsei students. Yonsei President Kim Han-joong also attended the gathering, expressing his gratitude to the members of the supporting association.
