Lee Jong-hwa’s 9th year of donation There is a man who makes a contribution to Yonsei on July 7 every year. His name is Lee Jong-hwa. He is the Chairman of the Korea Ready Mixed Concrete Industry Association and alumni of the Graduate School of Business. This year he has once again donated ten million won as a ‘school building fund’. He has been donating five or ten million every year. It is his 9th contribution this year, and the total amount up to now is seventy five million won. Mr. Lee is putting into practice what he once said: “As long as I engage in social activities, I will make a contribution every year.” There is a fascinating story on how Mr. Lee started this contribution to Yonsei every year. On July 7, 2002, he was at an international seminar in China and it was his 70th birthday. His colleagues got to know this, and then the Dean Kim Jun-seok in Graduate School of Business, Yonsei University and Mr. Lee’s colleagues prepared a surprise birthday party for him. After dinner, they all celebrated Mr. Lee’s birthday—flowers, birthday cake with 7 candles, and birthday song. In spite of being the oldest student, he was never late for the class and played a pivotal role in and out of classes. Mr. Lee was so touched and happy that he donated the ten million won that his family had given him as a birthday present to Yonsei University. Since then, he has been making a donation to Yonsei on his birthday every year. Despite his busy life, he pays a visit to his alma mater every year and makes a grateful contribution. Although he is 77 years old, he is always full of the energy and enthusiasm for learning. He asked Yonsei students, who are about the age of his grandchildren, to “Have big dreams when you are in your twenties.”
