Famous review journal of Royal Society of Chemistry, August 2010 Professor Kim Dong-ho (Department of Chemistry at Yonsei University) has published his recent research about expanded porphyrins in Chemical Society Reviews as a cover article in a volume of August, 2010. In the past, the characterizations of expanded porphyrins have not been carried out systematically, although expanded porphyrins attracted much attention for their potential applications in photo-electronic devices, data storage techniques, display industry, and photodynamic therapy. As a breakthrough in this research field, the research group led by Professor Kim has devoted their efforts to verifying the physicochemical characters of various expanded porphyrin systems, which remained unveiled so far, by using state-of-the-art laser instruments. Professor Kim and his research group published the result of their pioneering studies about the two-photon absorption phenomena and the steady- and excited-state dynamics of Hückel and Möbius (anti)-aromatic expanded porphyrins in prestigious international research journals such as Journal of the American Chemical Society and Angewandte Chemie International Edition in recent years. On the basis of these studies, they suggested, for the first time, that the physical and chemical properties of various expanded porphyrins are closely related to their molecular structures and aromaticity. In this review article published in Chemical Society Reviews, they have systematically summarized and highlighted all these experimental and theoretical results of various topology-controlled expanded porphyrins so that this paper can provide a number of scientists with valuable guidelines who have been involved in the researches on the aromaticity as well as the structure-property relationship in expanded porphyrins. Since Chemical Society Reviews, which is a representative review journal of Royal Society of Chemistry, has an impact factor of 20.086 indicating the highest level of authority, Professor Kim’s work introduced as a cover article is a clear evidence of the fact that his research is highly recognized in scientific world. As reported in invited review papers in Nature Chemistry, 2009 and Chemical Communication, 2010, his seminal works about studies on realization of the compound with Möbius strip-like structure caused a sensation in the chemistry society worldwide. In 2006 Professor Kim Dong-ho received the Korea Science Award in Chemistry, and he has been selected as the Star Faculty Award in 2005 as well as the Underwood Professor of Yonsei University in 2007. Furthermore, since 2009, he has been leading the World Class University Project on Smart Nano Conjugates which is being supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
