Summer 2010 Volunteer Community Act of Giving Hand in Farming in Nonsan city Just after the start of summer vacation for Yonsei students, the ‘2010 Yonsei Student Joint Volunteer Community Act of Giving Hand in Farming’ was conducted from June 24 to July 1 in Nonsan city, Chungcheongnam-do province. This year, 430 students associated in different departments, colleges and clubs (dongari) participated in the Volunteer Community Act of Giving Hand in Farming which was carried out in 29 towns across Nonsan city. The student volunteers’ primary task is helping out farmers with their farm work. However, the Yonsei Volunteer Community Act of Giving Hand in Farming extends and focuses on the ‘solidarity’ between farm workers and students, and on the ‘community’ in rural areas. Yonsei students visited farming families and spent valuable time with them. The activities with these families were divided and specialized into groups according to the family members’ age and gender—child, youth, adult, senior and women. Every night after dinner, Yonsei students discussed a number of issues such as the difficulties and problems of these farming areas and the necessity of a more gender-equal distribution of volunteer students in the program. The most exhilarating event was no doubt the town feast. Yonsei students prepared dinner and performances as a thank-you for the families and the town that provided the students with accommodation at the village hall and senior citizen hall. The student who was in charge of the program this year, Jung Jun-yong (Sociology 06), said, “Through this Volunteer Community Act of Giving Hand in Farming, I realized the importance of hard work, the people you work with, and our agriculture. It was a great opportunity to experience building a healthy relationship and to think about living together with others.”
