Three new pieces of Yonsei University Museum’s artifacts—SooSeonJeonDo, DaeSaRyeDo, and ShinChookJinYonDoByong—have been designated as Seoul city cultural properties. SooSeonJeonDo was registered as Seoul City tangible cultural property no. 296. It is a map of Hanyang, the capital’s former name, constructed by Kim Jeong-ho between 1824 and 1834. This map is assumed to have been used by an American missionary between 1885 and 1886. The map contains place names of Hanyang in the latter era of the Choson Dynasty and thus appraised as a valuable source for studies of map history and the history of the Korean language. Next, DaeSaRyeDo was registered as Seoul City tangible cultural property no. 305. It is a painting of a ceremony that was performed in celebration of a nationally acclaimed occasion. The painting illustrates an archery ceremony that was performed in celebration of King Youngjo’s 50th birthday in 1743. The occasion was carried out in Sungkyunkwan, an educational institute in the era of the Chosun Dynasty. Lastly, ShinChookJinYonDoByong was registered as Seoul City tangible cultural property no. 306. As an eight-fold folding screen, it provides an elaborate and colorful portrait of the royal ceremony of King Kojong’s 50th birthday in 1901.
