‘The Korean War and Peace in Northeast Asia: The Past, Present, and Future’ International Conference On June 23, at the Chang Ki Won International Conference Hall (Yonsei-Samsung Library), the East Asian Cooperation Center in the Institute of East & West Studies (Director, Park Myung-lim) held an international conference that explored the meaning of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. In line with the theme ‘The Korean War and Peace in Northeast Asia-The Past, Present, and Future’, the conference examined the influence and inheritance of the Korean War rather than the origin and responsibility, constituting a discourse on peace—not war. Five experts on the Korea War from five different countries: Korea, Japan, America, China, and Russia—gathered for the event: Park Myung-lim (Graduate School of Area Studies, Yonsei University), Wada Haruki (University of Tokyo), Bruce Cumings (University of Chicago), Shun Tzu Hua (East China Normal University), and Andrei Lankov (Kookmin University). Professor Park pointed out that the explosion of the issues with respect to the Korean Peninsula could provoke regional conflicts in Northeast Asia. Professor Cummings stressed that no changes on the Korean Peninsula will be made until US political leaders ponder over the history and lessons of the Korean War and make decisions to reconcile with North Korea.
