[INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS] International Campus Opens in March 2010… To be Completed by 2012 Via Two Phases

Information Session for International Campus Information Session for the International Campus was held on December 2 at Chang Ki Won International Conference Hall of Yonsei-Samsung Library. The current process of developing the International Campus, schedule for the opening by stages, educational programs and development plans for surrounding areas were introduced and explained to school staffs and students. Reflecting the increasing interest in the new campus, the session was attended by about one hundred participants from in and out of the campus. The International Campus opens in March 2010, when its construction Phase I-1 will be finished. The complete construction is scheduled to be accomplished by 2012 through Phase I-2. The opening of International Campus will be a step-by-step process. The year 2010 is the first phase for preparation, 2011 an operation phase and 2012 the third phase of campus expansion. These three phases correspond to a gradual increase in educational and research programs. When the construction phase I-1 is finished in early 2010, the organization of administrative structure, with a test run of the whole campus, is to be implemented, following the opening ceremony. In the same year, non-degree programs in the campus will be established. UNPSD(UN Project Center for Sustainable Development) is also planned to move in within the same year. In 2011, parts of undergraduate programs will move to the International Campus from the main campus and new undergraduate departments will be established there. In 2012, more departments will be added to the new campus and the collaborative programs with overseas institutions will be initiated with the completion of the Construction Phase I-2 which will add about 200,000 square meters to the campus. The planned goal of the number of students enrolment at that point is 3,000 domestic students and 1,000 foreign students. In the information session, the buildings planned to be constructed in the Phase I-1 were introduced, including the plans for interior spaces, with graphical presentations. Seo Seung-hwan, the deputy general manager of International Campus, mentioned that the current process rate is 79.13% so that the construction can be finished by next February. For educational programs, the current process to establish various colleges was introduced. Based on the principles of internalization and research, the colleges to be established are colleges for Asian regional studies, biomedical technology, interdisciplinary engineering, global business management, pharmacy, premedical course and dentistry. Other educational programs, such as the premium program, an educational program for students in the main campus, undergraduate foundation program for foreign students, and International Summer School, are also planned to be located at the International Campus.
