Yonsei will start to offer a “University Majors Guide Service” to students in middle and high schools near the campus. It is a part of Yonsei’s effort to strengthen its public contribution and support local communities, all in keeping with Yonsei’s vision of ‘Servant Leadership.’ The service, which is done by volunteering Yonsei students, is the first of its kind in Korea. For the service, students from Yonsei’s various departments visit neighboring local schools to have presentations on the majors at Yonsei, and to give advices about the majors. The service program will include aptitude tests and career counseling sessions. The program will also have online Q&A sessions and regular offline meetings to strengthen connections. The initial visit took place on November 30 with 45 Yonsei students from 30 departments participating. On the day, the students met 300 middle school students from Hanul Middle School to introduce their majors and advise them on their future juniors. Jung Gwang-soon, the manager of Yonsei Volunteer Center who promoted the “Majors Guide Volunteering,” said, “Many students change their majors or worry since their majors do not match their aptitudes” and “these troubles will be diminished if students know their aptitudes in advance and decide their majors when they are in middle and high schools.” The university is planning to meet and counsel 3,000 students in 100 schools until the end of the next year, extending the service by encouraging more volunteers.
