Underwood-Avison Distinguished Professors Five professors were chosen as Underwood-Avison Distinguished Professors. The professors were selected for their rare contribution to the development of Yonsei and society by their excellence in education, research and service. Ceremony for delivering the letters of appointment was held on November 2 at the Underwood Hall. The chosen professors are Professor Kwon Young-joon (Department of Physics), Baek Young-ki (Laboratory of Biosystems Informatics), Hong Daesik (School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering), Moon Myung-jae (Department of Public Administration), and Jung Hyun-chul (Department of Medical Oncology). The chosen professors will receive, in addition to the honorable title, an incentive of ninety million won for three years to pursue their academic interest. * Professor Kwon Young-joon (Department of Physics) Participated in "Belle Experiment" in 2008 Over 8,000 Times Cited Professor Kwon Young-joon is conducting a research on collision of electron and positron charged with high energy. Through his research, Professor Kwon examines electroweak interactions of basic particles, broken symmetry of universe and the disequilibrium of matter and antimatter. He published 450 papers, published in Nature and other top journals; his papers were cited more than 8,000 times. He also directed CKM Unitarity Triangle measurement from 1997 to 2006 in Belle experiment, an international collaboration that led to a research that won Nobel physics prize in 2008. From 2007, he is serving as a member of Publication Council in Belle group. He is also participating in publishing articles at the Review of Particle Physics as a member of Particle Data Group. *Professor Baek Young-ki (Laboratory of Biosystems Informatics) Discovered the Existence of Daumone to Provide Key to Solve Human Aging Leading Scholar in Protemics Study Professor Baek Young-ki discovered an element that controls aging in Caenorhabditis elegans, and named it daumone. His discovery, which was published in Nature, successfully examined the mechanism of biosynthesis and aging. He has developed his findings to contribute to their industrial application. His research on cholesterol generation process was published in international biochemistry textbooks. He established the first YPRC/BPRC in Asia, and fostered the institution to be one of the top 10 proteomics research institutions. He also found clues to liver cancer biomarker and developed and published a map of blood protein of Koreans. He recently developed material for preventing pine wood nematode, which he patented. The research was also published in international journals. Professor Baek is currently serving as the president of HUPO (Human Protein Organization) as well as being the senior editor and editorial member of 6 international journals. *Hong Daesik (School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering) Leading Scholar in 4th Generation Mobile Communication Professor Hong Daesik's main field of research is the next generation mobile communication which requires high quality data transmission with high bandwidth. He especially produced many research results in OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) and MIMO (Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output), core technology in the 4th generation mobile communication (4G). As a result of his fruitful researches with academic institutions and corporations, he acquired numbers of intellectual property rights in 4G technology in both domestically and internationally. He has so far published 216 papers including 100 papers published in SCI-listed international journals. He also has 120 domestic and international patents. He is currently focusing on developing a new mobile communication system to be used after 4G which is also known as "Beyond 4G." * Professor Moon Myung-jae (Department of Public Administration) The First Korean to Receive "Mosher Award" A World-Renowned Scholar in Public Administration For the past 12 years, Professor Moon Myung-jae has published 21 SSCI-listed papers on public management and electronic government in prestigious academic journals such as Public Administration Review and Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory. His outstanding academic achievement was recognized internationally, and led him to receive "Mosher Award" and "Boorsma Award" by American Society for Public Administration. His paper published in Public Administration Review in 2002 is one of the five papers listed on the website of the American Society for Public Administration. Professor Moon is currently working as a director of WCU Comparative International Governance Research Group, and is on the editorial board of four internationally renowned academic journals. *Professor Jung Hyun-chul (Department of Medical Oncology) Leading Scholar in Cancer Metastasis, Vascular Formation Studies. Published 130 SCI-listed Papers While Leading International Network for Developing New Medicine in Asia Pacific Region Professor Jung Hung-chul conducts rigorous researches to develop new anti-cancer medicines and discover biomarkers. He published nearly 130 papers in SCI-listed journals. He is conducting first-in-human researches of newly developed anti-cancer medicines using Asia-Pacific network of new medicine development. He is also doing a research on racial differences. At the same time, he continues his researches on cancer metastasis and vascular formation using bio resources bank and tumor registration at Yonsei Cancer Center. He is currently working as the director of Yonsei Cancer Center and the head of Biochip Research Center, conducting their efforts to apply research results on cancer metastasis, vascular formation and gene research to treating patients
