[INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS] President of Hungary László Sólyom Received Honorary Doctorate Degree

Recognized for His Crucial Role in His Country's Democratization The President of the Republic of Hungary László Sólyom received an honorary law doctorate degree from Yonsei University. The honorary degree was conferred on President László Sólyom on December 1 at Chang Ki-Won International Conference Room. The university announced that the honorary degree was granted to President László Sólyom for his crucial role in Hungary's democratization, which is in keeping with Yonsei’s pursuit of freedom and truth. President László Sólyom graduated from the Faculty of Political and Legal Sciences of the University of Pécs in 1965 and later obtained his doctorate at the University of Jena. He was university professor at the Department of Civil Law of the Eötvös Loránd University Budapest between 1983 and 1998. Since the early 1980s, he started his political career by taking positions as legal advisor to civic and environmental organizations. In 1989, he founded the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF), and played a significant role in the country's transition to democracy. He also served as the president of the Constitutional Court three times between 1990 and 1998. He was elected the President of Hungary in June 2005. Before the degree conferment ceremony, President László Sólyom had a meeting with President Lee Myung-bak to discuss ways to strengthen ties between the two countries. He also toured cultural heritages in Gyeongju and visited Samsung's factories.
