[YONSEI NEWS] The Late Professor's Wish, Converted to Bookshelves for Multi-cultural Families and Foreign Workers

2009 Asia Day for Filling Bookshelves A fund of ten million won raised by the family of the late professor Song Ha-won will is to be used for foreign workers and multi-cultural families. Professor Song passed away this year, teaching students till the last moment, keeping his lung cancer a secret to them. On October 31, Yonsei University and the Beautiful Foundation held an event "2009 Asia Day for Filling Bookshelves" in Yonsei University Gymnasium. In the event, which formed part of the foundation's "Asia with Wings of Books" project, the participants sorted about 8,000 books from 7 Asian countries provided by sponsoring corporations and the fund from the late Professor Song's family. The books were then delivered to some 20 libraries for immigrants around the country, such as All Nation's Culture Center and New World School. About 36,000 immigrant population are expected to read books in their own languages. The campaign has already sent 23,000 books in 11 different languages to 49 multi-cultural libraries in the country since 2007. Especially for this year's book sharing event, 50 Yonsei students participated to help distribute the books. Some of them came from the late professor's department. On that day, there were also 100 volunteers from various backgrounds who participated in the event. In August this year, the late professor Song's family already donated ten million Won to the Beautiful Foundation for Asian immigrants. During his lifetime, Professor Song actively supported foreign students to make his laboratory 'the most internationalized space in his college,' always having a deep concern for his foreign students. He once aided his Indian student to help his mother's medical operation. His family donated right after his decease, following his will, the entire condolence money of 30,000,000 Won collected during his funeral.
