Yonsei International Students Come Together to Make a Huge Rice Cake in the Shape of the Korean Peninsula On June 23, Yonsei international students gathered in Wolgotmyeon in Gimpo city, Gyeonggi province. These students made a huge rice cake, which resembled Korean peninsula to remember the Korean War and show gratitude to the countries that helped Korea during the war. Students who participated in the event were from 21 countries that sent their combat troops and medical units to support Korea: USA, UK, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, France, Philippines, Turkey, Thailand, Greece, South Africa, Belgium, Luxemburg, Columbia, Ethiopia for military support, and Sweden, India, Denmark, Norway and Italia for medical support. The theme of the event was ‘We Love Peace.’ The 3.5m x 5m huge rice cake with the message ‘We Love Peace’ was made by the students, while military band and ceremonial guards were holding flags of the 21 countries, after participants shouted messages expressing their longing for peace. After making this giant rice cake, the students viewed photographs of the war, and visited memorial places and historic sites. Salna Sunny, a GSIS student (Korean Studies) from India, said that "The event was helpful for understanding the lives of Korean people and experiencing Korean history."
