Discoveries Shed New Light on Korean Studies Translation of rare old manuscripts in the university library has been completed. The Yonsei University Institute of Korean Studies recently finished ‘the project for translation and replication of rare manuscripts’ which covered some 630 antique documents held in the Rare Book Archive of the Central Library. A symposium was held on 13 April to present the result of the project. The archive houses precious drafts, notes, manuscripts and unpublished editions. The institute has also completed Goseohaeje, a 12-book series of annotation and translation of selected works which was begun in 2003. Many new facts came to light throughout the project. For example, the original writer of Dampomanrok (淡圃漫錄), formerly known to be Hong Soo-heon(洪受瀗, 1640-1711), was found out to be Yi Seok-jae (李奭濟, 1772-1776), who used the same pen name as Hong Soo-heon. Writiers of prose collections such as Chudangjapgo (秋堂雜稿) and Chuheonyugo (楸軒遺稿) were also identified for the first time. Transcribed copy of Tongsa Kangmok(東史綱目) in the University Library was also determined as the oldest copy of the work. It was imprinted and handwritten by the author Ahn Chongbok himself. Dong-guk-isang-guk-jip (東國李相國集) in the Library was confirmed to be a very rare edition published in Goryo period. Shimdo, which shows a new aspect of neo-confucianism in 16the century Chosun, was discovered during the project. The book was formerly considered to be lost
