YSB Dean Visited Korea University Professor Park Sang-yong, the dean of Yonsei School of Business, delivered a special lecture titled "The Impossible Dream: Why Not?" at the LG-Posco Business Hall, Korea University, on 7 April. The lecture was a part of special exchange lectures by the Deans of business schools in both universities. The Dean of Korea University Business School, Professor Jang Ha-sung, delivered his lecture at Yonsei on 1 April. In the lecture, Professor Park mentioned that "Students in Yonsei and Korea University are starting from advantageous point from the fact that they study in such distinguished universities", while quoting cases from Malcom Gladwell’s new book Outliers. He also emphasized that "one’s natural gift does not guarantee his or her success, and it is the ‘Capitalization Rate’ that should be improved." He suggested in the lecture that it would be beneficial to both universities to have cooperation and competition on the ‘Capitalization Rate’ in educating ‘Professionals’ and ‘Entrepreneurs.’ But before commencing towards these goals, he pointed, there are some factors that block such goals: economic support, problem of system, and cultural factors. To solve these problems, he continued, various measures should be taken. For example, scholarships for students who do not have enough economic support should be increased, for which reason, as he pointed out, Yonsei School of Business is raising the amount of scholarship continuously. The problem of Korean education system which standardizes students is also a hurdle. To solve this problem, he suggested students to try to overcome the limits inherent in the majoring in business economics by having active experiences in various student activities and other academic fields, mentioning that the lectures conducted in business economics are fit for graduate students who have more experiences rather than undergraduates. He also stressed the importance of studies in humanities, for a deep understanding of society and human is required of business leaders. Before the end of the lecture, he encouraged students to have an ‘Impossible’ dream and do their best to achieve the dream, mentioning that people who made success such as the Beatles, Mozart, Kim Yu-na, and Shin Ji-yai invested more than 10,000 hours in their field. Before the lecture, the Deans of the two Business Schools discussed the future plan for establishing a system for student exchange between both Schools such as taking lectures in the other School.
