On April 1st, the second global day event of this year, Africa day, was held at the Global Lounge. Many African students at Yonsei worked together to ensure the success of this event. Like other previous global day events, they provided all participants with food, which consisted of plantain banana (one of the main staples in Africa), chicken with peanut butter sauce, couscous (a sort of pasta) and Chai Ya Viungo (Tanzanian milk tea). Also, the student group ‘Yonsei Global’ offered other services such as body painting and making bookmarks, which show how African symbols and patterns can be beautifully decorated. Since there were so many students queuing for food, other programs were followed a little behind the schedule. Three students made presentations on their nations (Congo, Togo, and Kenya), who are Rachael Imanui (20, Underwood International College), Gnamvo Kodjovi (19, Engineering), and Patrick Musyóka (21, Business Administration). They informed students of the basic facts and figures about their countries: Population, Weather, Resources, Economy, Main Industry, Culture, etc. After the presentations, the quiz event was held. On each quiz, students swiftly raised their hands for freebies (including coconut pack and others). There was an interesting scene at this point. One student from Korea University, the famous rival of Yonsei, raised his hands and had his answer half right, but the Yonsei students decided to give him the free gift anyway. Thus Yonsei students showed generosity and kindness to their rivals, which aren’t always reciprocated.
