Nepal Day Held in Yonsei Global Lounge The Nepal Day event was held in the Yonsei Global Lounge on February 4. It was the first international global day event this year, a series sponsored by the Office of International Affairs and planned by the student group "Yonsei Global". Nepali students, not only from Yonsei but also other universities as well, collaborated to inform visitors of Nepalese culture and traditions effectively. The students worked hard to win the audience’s attention and participation by means of quizzes and stage performances. Despite the fact that the university was in winter break, many students enthusiastically joined in the event. All seats were quickly filled and some latecomers had to stand. The event lasted three hours overall, consisting of four parts, the first part (between 5:30 and 6:15 p.m.) mainly consisting of the introduction of Nepali student members, a welcome speech, and a presentation on Nepal. The Nepal day event officially commenced with the Nepalese national anthem. The presenter asked the audience to stand up to sing the anthem together. Then, a candle-lighting ceremony was conducted by the current Nepalese ambassador, H.E Kamal Prasad Koirala. He also gave a welcoming speech to the audience and expressed special thanks to Yonsei University. Son Sung Moon, the coordinator from the Yonsei Office of International Affairs replied to the ambassador’s speech. Shortly after, two students provided information and basic facts on Nepal with the help of visual presentations such as pictures and a short film. The second part (between 6:15 and 7:00) was set aside for the sampling of food. Nepalese food was served to all participants. It took a long time for all participants to get their food due to the great number of people. The meal was comprised of Bhat (rice), Nan (white-flour flat bread), Dal (Soup), Lintil (Chicken curry), potatoes, and pickles. The participants eagerly awaited the food since it was dinner time. The third part of the event (between 7:00 and 8:00) was for music and dance performances. The performers presented traditional and modern dances on stage. Dancers performed dances wearing traditional costumes. Also, performers sang traditional and modern songs. One of the songs was performed in Korean so that everyone could enjoy the song more. Nepali presenters gave pop quizzes between events to keep students engaged. When students answered a question correctly, they were given prizes. One of the performers was a famous professional singer from Nepal. Lastly, the fourth part (between 8:15 and 8:30 p.m.) was given for the closing and photo session. The Nepal day event was a great success due to the efforts of the Nepali students at Yonsei and the eager participation of Yonsei students.
