Fifty-eight Yonsei graduates were elected to the National Assembly in the 18th General Elections held on April 9. Among the elected district delegates were 31 members of the Grand National Party, 12 from the United Democratic Party, one from the Liberty Forward Party, and four independents. Among the proportional representatives were three members of the GNP, two from the United Democratics, two Pro-Park United members, one Liberty Forward member, and two members of the Creative Korea Party. Looking at the election in general, the total 299 seats were filled, with 153 seats going to the GNP, 81 to the United Democratic Party, 14 to Pro-Park United, 18 to the Liberty Forward Party, five to the Democratic Labor Party, three to the Creative Korea Party, and 25 seats to independents. Of those elected, 41 were women, causing this year’s election to be evaluated as a surge of woman-power. The number of women delegates is on the rise, with 39 in 2004 and 16 in 2000. With these elections, Yonsei graduates have greatly augmented their political presence in Korea, which was already quite strong with 11 members of the Lee Myung-bak Presidential cabinet, including, Prime Minister Han Seung-soo (Political Science & International Studies), Minister of Knowledge and Economy Lee Yoon-ho (Political Science & International Studies), Minister of National Defense Lee Sang-hee (Graduate School of Public Administration), Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon (Graduate School of Journalism and Mass Communication)
