Yonsei University 123rd Anniversary commemoration “Some of the colleges constituting Yonsei University will be moved to the Songdo Global Complex, scheduled to open in 2010. The colleges that decide to use the new Songdo campus will benefit from the best environment for research and education.” On May 10 at 11:00 a.m. the event was held at the height of spring beauty, with the campus filled with new leaves and fragrant blossoms. In his speech for the event, University President Kim Han-Joong announced plans for the future of Yonsei. “We will create a system through which we will develop our three campuses of Sinchon, Wonju, and Songdo in consideration of the characteristics of each campus. The Songdo Campus will focus on research and globalization, the Sinchon Campus on general education, and the Wonju Campus will be an eco-friendly campus. In addition, we have plans for underground development below the Baekyang-ro, the symbol of Yonsei, which will allow us to create a car-free Baekyang-ro as well as securing space for cultural facilities.” President Kim also announced his plans for undergraduate admissions: “We will encourage middle- school students to participate in various volunteer service activities, which we will take into consideration when evaluating their applications.” This decision is an effort to produce warm-hearted individuals who would be willing to serve their neighbors and the world. Accordingly, volunteer work done while in middle school will be credited starting from the applicants in 2011. Among the admission categories at Yonsei, those which will be affected are the “Global Leader”, “Early Graduation”, and “Special Talent” categories. As part of the ceremony, President Lee Byeong-Moo of the Yonsei Alumni Association was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in economics. Also awarded were academic achievement awards, the Yonsei Medical Prize, and awards for continuous service to the university. Over 1,000 guests joined the celebration, including Chairman Bang Woo-Young of the Yonsei Board, former University President Song Ja, and former Minister of Education Yoon Hyung-Seop. Especially notable among the guests were Ms. Lydia Allen and Ms. Martha Allen, the great-granddaughters of Dr. Horace Allen. Dr. Allen was the founder of Jejungwon (Gwanghyewon), Korea’s first western medical facility and precursor of the Yonsei School of Medicine. Before the commemorative ceremony, at 10:00 a.m. the ceremony for the dedication of the Yonsei-Samsung Library was held. The Undergraduate Reunion event held later in the afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Centennial Hall brought together 1,000 graduates who had entered Yonsei 25 and 50 years ago, respectively. Yonsei graduate Choi Sang-Gyu was the singer for the event while Chun Samuel (Hannam University, Department of Christian Studies, Professor) provided the prayer. University President Kim and Alumni President Lee gave welcoming speeches, to which representatives Park Young-Sik (50-year graduate) and Lee Yeon-Joo (25-year graduate) responded. Former Yonsei President Park Young-Sik received applause for his statement that “although the buildings, students, and faculty have changed, the Yonsei spirit has not changed”. Those gathered for the 25- and 50-year Reunion donated a total of 1.3 billion won to the construction of the Academy Information Center, Graduate Hong Gyeong-pyo donated 30 million won for the construction funds for the Academy Information Center, and the entering class of ‘79 of the College of Business and Economics gave 10 million won for scholarship funds. The graduates also presented flowers to their former professors, Professor Kim Hyeong-Seok and Professor Yang Seung-Doo. The ground breaking ceremony for the International Dormitory II was held at 4:00 p.m.
