[Around the nation] Yonsei Graduates: Leading the Academic World as University Presidents

30 Yonsei Graduates and Professors Among Current Presidents of Private Universities in Korea On March 5, Professor Lee Young-Sun of the Yonsei Department of Economics was elected as the 7th President of Hallym University. Professor Lee is a graduate of the Seoul National University Department of Economics and received both his master’s and doctorate degrees in economics from the University of Maryland. Since being appointed as an assistant professor at Yonsei in 1981, Professor Lee has served in various academic capacities as Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies (2002-2004) and Dean of the Office of University Planning and Development (1998-2002), in addition to serving as Director of the Institute for Korean Unification Studies (1996~1998) and Institute of State Governance. Last February, Professor Kim Han-joong of the College of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine, was elected as the 16th President of Yonsei University. Yonsei Graduates are actively participating in the academic world as university president. As of March 2008, 30 Yonsei Graduates are serving as the presidents of major private universities in Korea. Sungkyunkwan University President Seo Jung-Don (Graduate School-Business), Hankuk University of Foreign Studies President Park Chul (Graduate School of Public Administration), Hanyang University President Kim Chong-Yang (Education), Kyungwon University President Lee Gil-Yeo (Graduate School of Public Administration), and Seoul Women's University President Rhee Kwang-Ja (Graduate School-Social Sciences) are the most prominent cases.
