2008 Northeast Asian Network Forum The 2008 Northeast Asian Network (NEAN) Forum was held at Yonsei University from January 28 to February 2 under the title of “Transcending the Boundaries of Northeast Asia”. The forum, an occasion for university students from Northeast Asian countries such as Korea, China, Japan and Russia, was hosted by the Yonsei Leadership Development Center and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The opening ceremony on the first day began with a keynote lecture from Minister of Foreign Affairs Song Min-Soon. For the Diplomatic Roundtable which followed immediately, Ambassadors William Stanton of the U.S., Gleb. Ivashentov of Russia, Brian Mcdonald of the EU, N. Parthasarathi of India, and representatives from the Ministry gathered to discuss the future of Northeast Asia. The forum was divided into the four areas of politics/national security, economics, culture, and aviation. In the politics/national security session, the positions of major nations on the issue of human rights in North Korea were discussed and solutions were suggested. The economics session involved discussions about how to make Northeast Asian currency stronger in the world market, while in the culture session the historicity of Northeast Asian cities and strategies to ideally revive them were explored. In the aviation session debates and presentations were shared on the issue of freeing aviation trade and the future of moderately priced airlines. In the special session on the Global Climate Change Crisis the participants took a sober look at the issue of global warming from the perspective of Northeast Asia and sought to propose solutions that would allow Northeast Asian nations to lead the global community on this issue.
