Covers Yonsei’s Plans for Change in Article The Hankyung Business Weekly’s February 11/18 issue covered the inauguration of University President Kim Han-Joong and the changes expected to be implanted in the near future. In this 17-page article, the current situation and the projected changes were examined in detail. The special issue entitled “Yonsei’s Future Revealed – Six Major Plans Set in Motion” began by introducing Yonsei’s sense of mission as Korea’s first university, which it seeks to reassert as that of the best, as well as the first university in the country. President Kim’s main goals of securing Yonsei leadership, improving PR and campus environment, improving education and research infrastructure, creating an effective administrative system, carrying on the Songdo Complex project, and securing a strong financial foundation were all discussed in great detail. In the interview section, President Kim shared the specific details of his plans to reach his goal of reviving Yonsei through “dignified change”. Stating that a new approach is required to fund raising, President Kim proposed to utilize ten percent of the funds raised for expenses, adopt an aggressive incentives system for staffs who contribute to fund raising, and set up clear rules for compensating those who make donations. Also, he explained that he intended to take advantage of Yonsei’s identity as a Christian university and raise funds from religious organizations as well. The article on the Songdo Global Academic Complex introduced Yonsei’s Songdo project as a model of regional development through which a network for not only education and research but also community life could be created. The expected benefits of the Sondgo Complex would be instrumental in Yonsei’s inclusion in the international top 100 list, as well as in the success of the Incheon Free Trade District project itself. The outstanding medical service of Severance was explored in an article which introduced Severance hospital’s ubiquitous system, Korea’s first successful adoption of robotics surgery, the 100th anniversary of producing Korea’s first doctor, and the May 2007 JCI accreditation, a direct index of the quality of Severance’s medical service. Additionally, the Residential College of Wonju Campus, the Underwood International College, the professional graduate schools of Law and Business, and the Graduate School of International Studies were reported in judicious detail. The article closed by predicting a bright future and high hopes for Yonsei’s goal of becoming the first and the best.
