A Leader of Change Inauguration of 16th University President Kim Han-Joong The inauguration ceremony for 16th President of Yonsei University, Kim Han-Joong, was held on February 21. President Kim announced the new vision of Yonsei as “Yonsei, the First and the Best” and explained that as the first university in Korea, Yonsei will lead the nation in change to be able to rub shoulders with the best universities in the world. He stated his goals of inbound globalization through the Songdo Global Academic Campus, research at the international level, and effective administrative systems as the stepping stones to reaching the ultimate goal of making Yonsei join the ranks of the top 100 universities worldwide within the next four years. To make this possible, President Kim proposed “dignified change”, inviting the harmonious and voluntary participation of the Yonsei community. Many guests participated in the ceremony to congratulate Yonsei’s new beginning, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technology Kim Woo-Sik, Korea University President Lee Ki-Su, Keio University President Anzai Uichiro, many presidents from other major Korean universities, and diplomatic emissaries from Israel, Pakistan, Argentina, Indonesia, and UAE. President Kim Han-Joong’s term will be for four years, from February 1, 2008 to January 31, 2012. Commencement February 2008 4,500 Bachelors, 938 Masters, 252 Doctors, and 17 Researchers Graduate The commencement ceremony for February of 2008 was held on February 22, 25, and 28 in various locations on campus. To ensure maximum participation of the students and their family in the ceremonies, Yonsei has been holding separate ceremonies since 1995. A total of 5,707 gradates were awarded their degrees, with 4,500 bachelors, 938 masters, 252 doctors, and 17 researchers graduating. Honorary Degree Awarded After Almost a Century to Independence Movement Hero Bae Dong-Seok An honorary degree was awarded after almost a century to former Yonhi Medical College student Bae Dong-Seok, who participated in the March 1, 1919 Independence Movement and marched for our country’s independence, but was arrested and died in prison. Bae was a one of the organizers of the historic demonstration which took place at the Tapgol Park in Seoul. After the first rally in Seoul, he took a copy of the declaration of independence to Gimhae and participated in the area’s first demonstration, but was immediately arrested by Japanese police and died a tragic death in the Seodaemun Prison. His patriotic valor was recognized by various national presidential awards, but Yonsei Medical School decided his alma mater should express its respect for its proud son by remembering him in this year’s commencement ceremony. His grandson Bae Gi-Young attended the commencement ceremony to receive his grandfather’s honorary diploma.
