Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton of Washington University Gives Lecture Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton of Washington University in Saint Louis visited Yonsei on October 24 to speak in a lecture attended by the chief administrators of the University. Focusing on the theme of “Global Partnerships in Education and Research,” Chancellor Wrighton emphasized to the audience that, “In order to become an internationally acclaimed university, it is important to cooperate, as well as compete, with other universities.” He stated that competing with other institutions involve maintaining an outstanding faculty, a strong vision of the future, and secure funding. However, in the areas of policies, requirement, regulations, and government funds, the Chancellor felt that cooperation was called for. He stressed especially the importance of regulation and tax related issues. “Taxes are deducted for donations made to the university, in order to encourage donations. The government must cut down on regulations and increase tax deduction.” Chancellor Wrighton also spoke about the independence of the university, goals for the university in the global sphere, poverty, energy and environment, health and water, aging, safety, economic growth, and the labor force. In response to a question about sustainability, he said, “We have maintained ‘All Green Buildings’ to cut down on carbon dioxide emission and increase energy efficiency.” Washington University in Saint Louis was founded in 1853 and is one of the world’s top universities, with 22 Nobel Laureates. The university boasts more than 110,000 graduates over the years, and among the current 12,000 students, nearly half are graduate students. The School of Medicine is especially strong at Washington University, much like at Yonsei, and is ranked in fourth after Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Pennsylvania. An important component of the university is the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, which was established three years ago with the goal of producing leaders in the international academic world. It currently boasts 23 partner universities, including 16 universities in Asia, Yonsei being one of them. Fourteen global corporations, including the Boeing Company, DuPont, and Fila Korea, sponsor the Academy, allowing it to fund its researchers with scholarships amounting to $60,000. The Academy is an exemplary instance of cooperation between the academic and business worlds. President Jung Chang-Young expressed his gratitude for Chancellor Wrighton’s lecture, praising his strong leadership and dedication to Washington University.”
