The Graduate School of International Studies Institute for Modern Korean Studies (Director Kim Hyuk-rae) hosted the 2nd Korean Studies Workshop for American Educators 2007, in accordance with an agreement made with the Korea Foundation. This workshop was held in two separate sessions (session 1: June 29 – July 11, session 2: July 12 – July 25) with 50 American social studies instructors participating in each session. For this workshop, nine lectures were held on various aspects of Korea including politics, economics, society, education, history and culture. Field trips to historical sites and exhibits (Changdeokgung, National Museum of Korea, National Folk Museum of Korea, War Memorial of Korea), a visit to the Northern boundaries (including the demilitarized zone), and cultural performances (Nanta, a comic performance using techniques of traditional percussion music; Gong Myong, a more traditional approach to percussion music; and Jump, a comic martial arts performance) were included in the program. Participants were also able to experience traditional ceremonial food at Yejiwon, a Korean sauna called “jjimjilbang,” and a view of the city from Seoul Tower. They also went on a four-day trip to the country down south of the peninsula, where they visited historical sites in Gyeongju, Gaya, Andong, and industrial facilities such as Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan.
