Korea’s First and Best in Library Science and Information Studies Yonsei University’s Department of Library and Information Science was established in 1957 for the first time in Korea, to meet a sudden and pressing need for librarians in Korea. Since then, the department has produced approximately 2,200 information science specialists over the span of 50 years and has greatly furthered library and information studies in Korea. The department’s 50-Year Anniversary Celebration was held on June 2 in the Centennial Hall and in addition included sports events, ceremonies, lectures, and arts festivals throughout the campus. The ceremony began with Celebration Committee Chairman Moon Sung Been’s (Professor of Library Science and Information Studies) opening address and University President Jung Chang-young’s congratulatory speech. Medals for Distinguished Service were awarded to retired professors, and this ceremony was followed by the Lee Byung-mok Scholarship awards, presented by emeritus professor Lee Byung-mok himself. Emeritus professor Lee Jae-chul, Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Information Studies Dr. Johannes J. Britz, and Profesor Kim Yong Won of the Surugadai University Cultural Information Resources Division each gave lectures on archival and information science, and after the lectures an art festival included a Samulnori (traditional percussion instruments) performance, a choral part, skit, cello recital, and precision dance. The alumni donated a total of 140 million won for the Celebration, and of this amount 100 million won will be set apart for an alumni scholarship fund for the undergraduate students of the department.
