The Institute for Korean Unification Studies (Director Lee Eun-Kook) hosted the “Unification Lectures” on June 4. The most notable of lecturers was Dr. Rainer Eppelmann, the last Defense Minister of East Germany. Dr. Eppelmann is currently Chairman of the Stiftung Aufarbeitung, an organization that deals with the examination and reappraisal of the Communist dictatorship during the years of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). After working for the democratization of East Germany, Dr. Eppelmann became the Defense Minister through the first, and also the last, free elections held in East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. After reunification, Dr. Eppelmann served as an assemblyman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany for 15 years. He is considered one of the foremost experts on reunification. Dr. Annette Kaminsky, director of the Stiftung Aufarbeitung, visited Yonsei with Dr. Eppelmann. Dr. Eppelmann’s lecture was on “The National People’s Army of East Germany and the German Reunification,” and Dr. Kaminsky lectured on “The Reappraisal of the Communist Dictatorship of the German Democratic Republic.” They not only conveyed the spirit of the German reunification, but pointed out the realistic problems involved in the reunification process. Director Lee of the Institute for Korean Unification Studies expressed deep satisfaction over the lectures, saying, “The lectures allowed us to share the experience of German reunification and also to envision the future of the Korean unification.”
