Underwood International College Holds Traditional Culture Event at Andong International faculty members and students at Yonsei were given a chance to experience traditional Korean culture. On June 20, Underwood International College (Dean Mo Jongryn) invited 100 professors and students from the 2007 Yonsei University International Summer School to visit Andong, Gyeongbuk, to experience the traditional tal (mask) and food culture of Korea. Andong is well known as a place to experience traditional culture, and the number of foreign tourists is rising sharply, due to a tour package that includes Hahoe Folk Village (Main Folk Asset No. 122), where the ancestral home of Korean Wave star Ryu Si-won is preserved. Andong is home of many other tourist attractions, including the International Andong Maskdance Festival. After arriving at Andong, the international professors and students participated in the “Yonsei-Andong Agreement Ceremony,” in which University President Jung Chang-young and Andong Mayor Kim Whee Dong were also present. A traditional dish of the Andong area, Andong Dak Jjim (spicy steamed chicken), was on the menu for lunch. After eating, the group toured Hahoe Folk Village, where traditional Korean buildings are well preserved, visited the Hahoe Mask Museum, and attended a performance of the Hahoe Pyulshingut Mask Drama, the Hahoe area's combination of masks, dance, drama, and shaman rituals. The “Yonsei-Andong Government-Academic Cooperation Agreement Ceremony” was held at the Andong City Hall. The agreement was made for the purpose of introducing the traditional culture of Korea to the world and sharing Yonsei’s outstanding academic achievements and human resources. Yonsei and the City of Andong will cooperate in developing programs for the traditional culture education institutions of Andong, such as the Dosan Seowon Seonbi Culture Education Camp and the Korean Studies Advancement Center, and in providing opportunities for international members of the Yonsei community to experience traditional culture by participating in Andong district events, including the International Andong Maskdance Festival. From 7:00 p.m. on the same day, a session was held to provide information about Yonsei to the students, parents, and teachers of the Andong and Gyeongbuk area.
