A paper in which Professor Yi Do-joon (Psychology), Professor Martin Chun (Yonsei alumnus) of Yale University, and Yonsei graduate Park Soo-jin participated was published in “Neuron”, an international journal. The paper is titled “Beyond the Edges of a View: Boundary Extension in Human Scene-Selective Visual Cortex”. When the human brain processes a scene that the eyes have just seen, it creates a slightly expanded and exaggerated space from what it has actually seen. For example, if people are shown a picture of some scene and instructed to draw what they saw a few minutes later, their drawings include a larger area than what they saw. This faulty memory is called the boundary extension effect. The research conducted by this team used fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) to reveal how space processing devices in the cerebral cortex such as the PPA (parahippocampal place area) and RSC (retrosplenial cortex) represent information regarding space. Such research will be able to show how humans are able to perceive an entire and continuous scene despite limitations in vision or range
